API Key

Give apps and agents runtime access to APIs that authenticate with a static key.

Create Connector
  1. Install the skill

    $ npx skills add vercel/vercel-plugin --skill vercel-connect
  2. Connect to API Key

    $ vercel connect create your-api --name my-api
  3. Use its data in agents(opens in new tab) and apps(opens in new tab)

    import { getToken } from '@vercel/connect';
    const token = await getToken('api-key/my-api');

Use API Key in apps and agents

Store a static API key once, then request it from server-side apps and agents only when it is needed. Vercel Connect keeps the secret out of source code, prompts, and client-side bundles while making the connection reusable across approved projects.

Why use Vercel Connect with API Key?

  • Credentials on demand

    Request API Key credentials only when your application or agent needs them instead of copying secrets into application code.

  • Access for the right subject

    Keep app-scoped API Key access behind a reusable connector controlled by your team.

  • Centralized credential management

    Manage API Key credentials in one place and retrieve them through a consistent runtime API.

  • Vercel-native controls

    Bind connections to the projects and environments that need them while Vercel OIDC authenticates each runtime request.

Use API Key with your stack

Follow a complete setup for the Connect SDK or a supported agent framework.

Add API Key to an existing Vercel application with the Connect SDK.

  1. Install the Connect SDK

    npm install @vercel/connect
  2. Create the API Key connector

    Run these commands from the project that will use the connection.

    vercel link
    vercel connect create your-api --name my-api
    vercel env pull
  3. Request API Key credentials

    app/api/route.ts
    import { getToken } from '@vercel/connect';
    const token = await getToken('api-key/my-api');
